I will probably say this about almost every crystal featured here.
Smoky quartz is one of my favorites! For me, it holds so much power, this raw energy that just wants to support you and transmute any negativity in your field.

A Brief History Lesson
Smoky Quartz can be found all over the world, it predominately comes from Brazil, also in Madagascar, Scotland, New Zealand, Spain, Russia, Switzerland, and even Colorado, USA. It is the National Gemstone of Scotland and the State Gemstone of New Hampshire.
In Scotland, the Celtic first mined this stone around 300 B.C out of the Cairngorm Mountains and it became intertwined into articles in their daily clothing, from pins and brooches to more ornate pieces such as on the handles of daggers.
Mineralogist James Dwight Dana gave the beauty the name smoky quartz, due to its shades and hues that look like smoke in 1837.
For centuries countries in Europe have made crucifixes to hang on walls in bedrooms to ward off evil spirits, nightmares, and bad luck.
In North America, shamans have used it for similar purposes, a force of protection against the darker side of the ethereal realms.
Smoky Quartz Composition
Smoky quartz is a type of crystalline quartz, and has a wide range of colors from almost clear and silver, like pure quartz, to yellow and orange to deep browns, such as in the image above. While it may look gray or black, it is actually just a very rich shade of brown.
Think of the richness of the earth, the color of healthy soil that is dark and alive.
The coloring of this stone comes from radiation emitted from the surrounding rock which activates the color centers around the aluminum impurities in the crystal.
It is found within masses of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Because of this there can be things almost trapped within the stone, inclusions of solids, liquids, or gases.
This only adds to the beauty and mystical property of the stone.
With a Mohs Hardness rating of 7, she is a fairly durable stone and has a beautiful glassy look about her when cut.

Five Shades Of Smoky Quartz
Being that there is such a range of shades and colors for this magnificent stone, they are categorized into five shades. I did not realize this, and it really broadens the horizon as to the diverse and all-encompassing spectrum of smoky quartz.
Each is so beautiful and holds slightly different qualities so that you may need to add more than one to your collection depending on your primary needs and objectives for using it!
From left to right we have: Citrine Smoky Quartz, Amethyst Smoky Quartz, the jaw-dropping Brandberg Smoky Quartz, from the Scottish Cairngorm Smoky Quartz, and lastly the rare, dark, and handsome Morion Smoky Quartz.

Smoky Associations
Smoky quartz is associated with the Zodiac signs of Scorpio, Saggitarius, and Capricorn. It is most closely valued by the Scorpio as they are considered the dark and more mysterious signs of the zodiac.
At the time of writing this, we are in the sign of Scorpio, which is ruled by Mars and Pluto, and it is a beautiful yet intense time of reflection, curiosity, and magnetism.
Holding my crystal tight, hah.
You will find this powerful gem is related most with the root chakra, it is one of the best stones that I have found for grounding, connecting with the strength of the earth, and keeping negative energies at bay.
With its powerful effects on focus and determination, it also is correlated with the solar plexus chakra, which is responsible for our personal power and drive.
It is related to the elements Earth and Air.

Healing Properties Of Smoky Quartz
Let’s get into the reason we are here! Smoky quartz is such a powerful healing stone.
The healing properties range is as vast as the color scheme.
Once you find a piece that resonates with you, you will be blown away by all the ways, places, and areas of life you can use it.
When you are looking to connect to your crystal, really any crystal, it is important to be present with it, if only for a moment, and set an intention around what it is you need support in.
What I’ve noticed is that some of the benefits and magic don’t always happen right away with this one, it is a slow-burn kind of crystal, one that is in it for the long haul.
This makes it a perfect piece to keep in your home, in your car, in your purse, or backpack so that it can protect and transmute energy without you thinking about it. Just be sure to charge them and give them some intentional love every once in a while! 🙂

Physical Healing Properties
This gemstone gets its smoky quality due to the presence of sodium, which means it can help to facilitate the regulation of liquids within the body. This is also beneficial for aiding in reaching a state of equilibrium within the body in relation to the absorption of mineral supplements.
Smoky quartz is an incredible detoxifying stone, not only for negative energies but also for breaking up and pulling out toxins and clearing congestion within the physical organs and glands. This is particularly effective in the solar plexus area and when placed by the hands and the feet.
It can also help to protect from radiation and electromagnetic frequencies.
It provides balancing of the ying-yang energy which can assist in the alignment of the meridians within the body. In relation to the chakra placement of the root and solar plexes, smoky quartz has been used for relieving menstrual cramps, and digestion issues, relaxing tightness in the abdominals and the hips, as well as being a powerful tension headache reliever.
Mental/Emotional Properties
So many things. If you are feeling stuck, anxious, depressed, uncertain, scared, negative, unmotivated, or overwhelmed, smoky quartz has got your back!
I grab this stone when I am needing a sense of calm, of balance within the craziness of life. I have a tower in front of me right now to help with focus and concentration while working on this post, plus I like to hold it to give my fingers a break from tapping on the keyboard, hah.
I’ve mentioned it a few times, but to reiterate, smoky quartz is at taking negative and destructive energies and releasing them, detoxifying your field of the energy that is blocking you. It can be used to dissolve barriers between the beta and alpha states of mind. For example, if one is worried and wants to set aside the thinking mind and achieve a more clear mental state, smoky quartz will be there for the assist.
Due to its grounding attributes, it enhances the energy of NOW, creating more awareness of the present moment and enhancing clarity of thought. Smoky quartz cultivates personal pride and joy in one’s life.
The subtle and pure energy can penetrate through negative patterns, conscious or subconscious, and aid in dissipating that energy.
I could really keep going, but let’s move on to some metaphysical/spiritual applications!

Metaphysical Properties of Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz is a high vibrational crystal and has been said by healers to emit white light when using it during energy sessions. It vibrates to the numbers 2 and 8.
As I mentioned before, it is not always a quick-acting stone, and I think Melody states it both eloquently and profoundly in her book Love Is In The Earth- A Kaleidoscope Of Crystals. She states “This stone does not astound one with its speed; ie., it is prolonged, yet intense and gentle, in its actions; on the higher levels, such as meditation, simply holding the stone will suffice.”
I’ve been meditating a lot with my smoky quartz, and I have found that while simply holding it I feel calmer, more protected, and more connected.
Smoky quartz has been called a stone of cooperation, creating unity within oneself, within groups, and with the higher realms. Tribal ceremonies frequently use this mineral during activities that are intended on connecting with other words, because of this quality, along with its field of protection.
It is very commonly used among energy healers, such as Reiki practitioners and crystal healers, during a “laying-on-of-stones” placed at the hands, feet, and root chakra area, with the point of the stone facing away from the body.

The Smoking Quartz Gun
How freaking beautiful would that be, a gun shaped smoky quartz. Just a statement piece of course, hah.
I hope you have found this article enjoyable and informative, and if you do not already have smoky quartz of your own, you are eager to add it to your crystal box! Or shelf, or alter, or bag, or drawer, or wherever you keep your precious gems.
My favorite of these are double terminated points, especially in a more raw form, however I always keep my tower, and tumble closeby! The images throughout this post links to some great sites to purchase quality crystals, or you can head to your local metaphysical store, they should absolutley have it!
Have a beautiful rest of your Tuesday my friends.
Love and vibes,
