This might sound like an anti-hydrogen for human consumption article.
If you are here, then you have heard of its benefits and are obviously interested in hydrogen water, however, you are diligent in doing your research and not just jumping on the next wellness hype train.

Truly, you are incredible.

Don’t worry, you are in the right place. What I will be covering in this article is what to look for when buying a hydrogen water vessel, so that you can make an educated and gut-yes decision!
Because hydrogen is truly a miracle molecule, and all the benefits you have encountered about it, are real.

With that said, all bottles are not created equal, and the effects of purchasing a less-than product, could not only be a waste of your money but detrimental to your health as well!

THE PROCESS OF CREATING HYDROGEN: ELECTROLYSIS

Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. 
This reaction takes place in a unit called an electrolyzer.
There are three main types of electrolyzers-

Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Electrolyzers, otherwise known as Proton Exchange Membrane, works by using an acidic polymer membrane as an electrolyte to facilitate the transfer of protons (H+) between the electrodes and the water molecules, resulting in the production of hydrogen and oxygen gas.
Alkaline Electrolyzers, use a liquid alkaline solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte.  The process is made possible by the presence of the electrolyte solution, which contains hydroxide ions (OH-) that facilitate the transfer of electrons between the electrodes and the water molecules.
Solid oxide electrolyzers, which use a solid ceramic material as the electrolyte that selectively conducts negatively charged oxygen ions (O^2-) at elevated temperatures, generate hydrogen in a slightly different way. These are really only used in large-scale laboratory settings.

In short, PEM electrolyzers use a special acidic polymer (plastic) membrane, while Alkaline Electrolyzers use an alkaline solution to facilitate transfer.
PEM is the highest in the industry standard. Look for PEM, not Alkaline.

PEM Electrolyzer

Electrolyzers consist of an anode and a cathode separated by a special membrane. The importance of the membrane is covered below.
Water reacts at the anode to form oxygen and positively charged hydrogen ions (protons).
The electrons flow through an external circuit and the hydrogen ions selectively move across the PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) to the cathode.
At the cathode, hydrogen ions combine with electrons from the external circuit to form hydrogen gas.
Anode Reaction: 2H₂O → O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e^– Cathode Reaction: 4H⁺ + 4e^– → 2H₂

The acidic polymer membrane plays a crucial role in the process by allowing the positively charged hydrogen ions to pass through it while preventing the negatively charged oxygen ions from passing through. This selective permeability is what separates the two half-cells and creates the necessary potential difference for the reaction to occur.

I know that seems a little intense, but it’s important to have a basic foundation of the process that happens to create the hydrogen-rich water.

QUALITY OF MEMBRANE

This is it. The quality of the membrane makes the bottle able to perform at either a placebo or therapeutic standard.

Price is going to be a factor in this. The cost of a quality membrane alone will be a couple of hundred dollars. I promise any bottle on Amazon, Alibaba, or any cheap overseas producer is not worth it. I will have research posted to back this up soon, don’t think I’m just talking bull hah.

I hate to break it to you, but factories in China can put whatever the buyer wants them to on the label. Without it being true.
“In August, the Wall Street Journal detailed how little oversight the company (Amazon) has over the products sold on its platform, which results in “thousands of banned, unsafe or mislabeled products” floating around on there. The paper itself found more than 10,000 such items on the site between June and August.”

And that is just on Amazon.
This is why it is CRUCIAL to know the company you are making such an important purchase from.
This isn’t just another pretty bottle to take to the gym.

ELECTRODE MATERIAL

This is super important because when you are producing electricity in water, you will eventually get metal leaching. Just a fact.
Platinum-titanium (Pt-Ti) electrodes. This is the only material you want as electrodes.
Anything else will corrode more quickly overtime, creating heavy metal leakage into the water!
There should also be a special coating that covers the electrodes to further protect them and increase the longevity of the bottle, but not many companies are using additional protection.

VOLTAGE

More is not always better! A higher voltage is one of the top things to look for when comparing hydrogen bottles, or if they don’t have one listed at all.
There is a very popular bottle, that in their science and and technology pages on their site, does not include any of the actual specs of the device.
The ones on Amazon don’t list them either.

5 volts is the industry standard for hydrogen bottles.
Kangen home water system uses 24v.

The higher the voltage, the more reaction there will be in the water. So if there are higher amounts of contaminants or TDS (total dissolved solids) then there is more matter for the electricity to interact with, and electricity interacting with matter, especially in water, changes the composition of such things.

That water has to be separated and disposed of! Most bottles on the market have a drip system, but really, that isn’t getting all the byproducts out. This is why Kangen has to have two separate water lines, to keep the dirty water separate.

Another important factor relating back to the electrode material as well is when you are producing electricity in water, you will eventually get metal leaching. Just a fact.

HYDROGEN CONCENTRATION

Keeping this simple.

If you see a bottle with over 5000 PPB (parts per billion) or 5 PPM (parts per million), it is a lie.
It is impossible to create that level of concentration on earth, due to our atmospheric conditions.

1.2 to 1.6 PPM is the therapeutic concentration.
Again, more is not better.

HYDROGEN RETENTION

How long does the active hydrogen last?
Most recommend drinking the water within half an hour.

That’s a great standard.
But could it last longer?
Only with high tech and profound quality of materials. 🙂 Even up to 24 hours.

MAINTENANCE & WARRANTY

Have you ever had a juicing machine?
Or even a Ninja blender?
Be honest, have you avoided making something because you have to clean the machine?

We all know one-year warranties are the bare minimum and generally products are only designed to last two to three years. Just long enough to make you feel like you’ve gotten a fair amount of use out of it and not be upset to buy another one.

Two-year warranties are where it’s at. Also without a handful of restrictions.
